# Sticky Vs Rotating (Vs Static)

Different proxies can have different characteristics with regards to the stability of their IP addresses.

**Quick Definitions**

<details>

<summary>Rotating</summary>

Rotating proxies automatically change the user's IP address at set intervals or with every request.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Sticky</summary>

A sticky proxy maintains the same IP address for a set duration or for the duration of a session.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Static</summary>

A static proxy provides a fixed IP address that doesn't change with each request.

| Product Range              | Type               |
| -------------------------- | ------------------ |
| Datacenter Proxies         | Static             |
| Static Residential Proxies | Static             |
| Residential Proxies | Sticky or Rotating |

{% hint style="info" %}
**Why can't Residential Proxies be static?**

Peer residential proxies rely on the internet connections of real users (peers). These users may turn off their devices, disconnect from the internet, or the ISP might change their IP address. This unpredictability prevents the establishment of a stable, unchanging (static) proxy IP.
